Spider Angioma/Spider Nevus Skin Disorders: Causes, Symptoms, Treatments

Spider angioma is an asymptomatic blanchable pink papule found on the skin due to a central dilated arteriole and very fine radial branches.

HISTORY:

  • Spider angiomas are found in 10-15% of normal adults and children.
  • Lesions represent dilatations of a previously existing vessel rather than a neoplasm.

SKIN FINDINGS:

  • There is a central, slightly raised, bright red vascular papule from which fine blood vessels radiate.
  • Firm pressure easily blanches the radiating vessels, whereas the central papule is less easily blanched.
  • Pulsation of the central papule with this technique confirms the arteriolar nature of the papule.
  • Spider angiomas are most commonly found on the face, and also on the neck, upper trunk, and upper arms in adults.
  • Spider angiomas in children, lesions are also frequently seen on the hand and fingers.

NON-SKIN FINDINGS:

  • Spider angiomas during pregnancy can occur with increased frequency and in the setting of a chronic liver disease.
  • It has been suggested that spider angiomas occur in a state of relative estrogen excess.
  • Lesions arising during pregnancy tend to resolve after the birth.
  • Those found in patients with liver disease are persistent.

COURSE AND PROGNOSIS:

  • Spider angiomas arising during pregnancy and those occurring in children tend to disappear spontaneously over a period of 3-4 years.

TREATMENT:

  • The patients looking for a spider angiomas treatment in Chandigarh should be reassured that spider angiomas are common, benign lesions that can be healed without any treatment.
  • If the lesion is persistent and cosmetically bothersome, it may be treated with either pulsed dye laser or electrocautery.
  • The patients should know that spider angiomas laser removal is a cosmetic procedure, that there is a scarring, and that lesions may recur.
  • Consultation with a specialist should be considered. You must discuss spider angiomas removal cost with the doctor also.
